Two biggest problems in the world: global warming and corporate america. I just read an article regarding the latter. In this case, I am referring specifically to corporate america in terms of consumption and media influence. To summarize the article, advertisers are beginning to make actual full length television shows (and some even movies, like Burger King.. idiots) featuring their products. Very clever from a business point of view. But what does it mean for the general public? It means we will be further brainwashed to accept whatever crap they throw at us without any regard to the consequences of that companies actions. And what can we do if we do care? Nothing, because the stores that can offer us products at reasonable prices get their merchandise from those companies, because that is what they can afford.

One way that I think we could combat the issue of corporate control over the media is to increase the amount of money we give to the NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) so that the broadcasting programs don't need to rely on the advertisers as much. Because, according to my theater class, the US gives the LEAST amount of money to the NEA compared to the rest of the developed nations. They give significantly less. That is because the people in office don't care about art and its impact on society and its current relationship to corporate america.

Lastly, to bring in the other biggest problem in the world, global warming, basically we're screwed. Because it is these corporations that are contributing to the problem and preventing the government from taking more action (obviously there is a lot more to it than that, but that is a factor). So, pretty much, we're all gonna die and our funerals will be paid for by Pepsi. But just kidding, like dad says, people are like rats, it's pretty hard to wipe us out.... Hmm, now that I've ended on a really morbid and depressing note, it is time to go out and party! Posted by lib at November 10, 2006 09:43 PM
