Singing in the Car

I just read Josh's website and although he probably wanted me to take away from his entry a sense of his new traffic situation, I was instead drawn to this quote:

"At any rate, the traffic isn't noticeably worse than before (and is way less frustrating), so this space won't start taking the T again, probably, so you'll have to just imagine reading a guy who reads the New Yorker instead of a guy who sings ridiculously along to CD's and yells at other cars. So it goes."

I just wanted to point out that he also drums on the steering wheel along to songs while driving... As opposed to maybe, oh I don't know.. Steering. But this lead me to yet another thought, or actually a memory. So when I was little (by little I mean anytime from like three to ten) I used to sing really obnoxiously in the car. I was well known by those who often rode in cars with me for my famous line - "and this is what I knoooowwwwww," which was sung way off tune, and to fill the space inbetween songs. I dragged that line out according to how long it took me to think of a new song to sing.

So anyway, I was a little conceited about my singing abilities. I was the master of soulful slave songs, jaunty, partiotic songs, and singing along to the Beach Boys which I would listen to on my headphones (so while I was enjoying the nice voices of the Beach Boys themselves, all anyone else in the car heard was the sound of my loud, loud singing voice). So one time, my dear brother Joshua was accompanying us (me, Dad, Mom and Martha) on a trip to the airport. We were all headed (except for Josh) to Disney World. So I was, to say the least, excited. After laughing obnoxiously for about a half hour (I use the word obnoxious a lot, but really, it suits me), I decided it was time for a little Beach Boys! So, I put on my headphones and began singing. At one point, I skillfully changed the lyrics of one song to something along the lines of "what are you getting me for my birthday Josh?"

Then, years later, as Josh and I and other various members of the family were sitting around talking, Josh recalled my old singing days. He said, and I quote: "Lib was not only tune deaf, but tune dumb." Now, are those the words of a loving brother or what? So I was pleased to see that he mentioned in his entry his habit of singing ridiculously. Although you can't blame us, we get it from Dad. Him being the master of annoying songs and all, what else would you expect? Posted by lib at April 6, 2004 06:58 PM
