Freedom

I was reading Eric Alterman's blog and saw that he pointed to a speech by Bill Moyers at West Point. I actually checked it out and found one of Moyers' thoughtful, serious and pointed commentaries. I suggest you look at it, no that you read it. He makes some excellent points about the nature of the military in a free democracy, and the responsibilities of the members of that military, as well as what is due them from the democracy. Go read it and pray that the young graduates heard and thought about what he had to say. I was particularly taken by this quote,"Blind faith in bad leadership is not patriotism. In the words of G.K. Chesterton: “To say my country right or wrong is something no patriot would utter except in dire circumstance; it is like saying my mother drunk or sober.” Patriotism means insisting on our political leaders being sober, strong, and certain about what they are doing when they put you in harm’s way."
